Malibu Metamorphosis

The owners of this Malibu beach house like to entertain family and friends. Over the course of a decade, a series of remodels reflect the evolution of their lives. We gave the home a lighter feel and a more modern, open living space. The color palette became a masculine mix of deep blues, indigos and grays to complement the lighter teak that replaced heavy dark beams and floors. A home bar, complete with swivel chairs and easy access to the deck, is at-the-ready for a Sunday afternoon cocktail.

The deck itself holds a “spool” — a cross between a spa and a pool — and we planted a coastal tree for contrast and shade. Nautical touches, like brass screws and boat-worthy mahogany, remind them how close they are to the ocean, as if they could ever forget.
